Large Increase in Migration and in the Number of Non-Permanent Residents in Québec in 2016

The Institut de la statistique du Québec recently published its 2016 provisional statistics on international and interprovincial migration in Québec.

Net migration in the province stood at 34,632 individuals last year, a 25 per cent increase compared to 2015. This was due to strong international migration (46,609 individuals). On the other hand, interprovincial net migration remained in negative territory (-11,977), as more Quebecers left the province to settle elsewhere in Canada than the opposite.

The most notable result in these provisional data is undoubtedly the fact that the number of non-permanent residents¹ in Québec exploded to 10,976 in 2016, which is the highest it has been in almost 30 years (1988).
